Geoffrey Handsfield
Dr Handsfield received a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Mathematics Minor from East Carolina University, where he was a competitive swimmer in the National Collegiate Athletics Association. After working for a year in Medical Physics, he began studying musculoskeletal biomechanics, imaging, and computational modeling under the direction of Professor Silvia Blemker in the Multiscale Muscle Mechanophysiology Lab at the University of Virginia. He obtained a PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2014. He worked briefly for a startup company in Charlottesville, Virginia focused on medical imaging, image analysis, musculoskeletal modeling, and big data analytics. He was made a Whitaker Scholar in 2015, and came to the Auckland Bioengineering Institute to work with Associate Professors Thor Besier and Justin Fernandez in the Musculoskeletal Modeling Group. He has been an Aotearoa Fellow and a recipient of grants from the NZ Orthopaedic Association and the Royal Society of New Zealand.
